BBQ Smoke

If you’re at all like me just the smell of hickory smoke from a BBQ makes me hungry! It takes me to a happy place where smoked pork shoulder and our special Slow Smoke BBQ sauce are in abundance. For you maybe it’s a family reunion. Tailgating before a pro sports event. There’s no disputing that the aroma of something takes us back to THAT place.

Let’s go back in time. Imagine that you’re walking through a dusty town in Israel in the year 200 B.C. The smell of smoke would be associated with something very different, something incredibly important. The sacrifice and forgiveness of sin. YOUR sin. MY sin.

What would my reaction be at the hint of that sacrificial smoke? I would hope that it’d be to drop to my knees with a heart of thankfulness for what has been done for me. What about you? Do you remember what He’s done for you?

Psalm 78:5-8 challenges us, commands us, to tell our children of the great and mighty works of God SO THAT they’ll put their trust in Him. He sacrificed His son. He’s provided this amazing nation we live in. Are you thankful? Are you being a good steward in sharing what’s He’s done?

5 He decreed statutes for Jacob and established the law in Israel, which he commanded our ancestors to teach their children,
6 so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children.
7 Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands.
8 They would not be like their ancestors — a stubborn and rebellious generation, whose hearts were not loyal to God, whose spirits were not faithful to him.
