Is He Calling Us Now?

I was reading the devotional Experiencing God Day by Day and the reference verse was Zechariah 4:6. Zechariah 4 is speaking to a the time when the Israelites had finally returned home after 70 years of captivity in Babylon. They found Jerusalem and the temple in ruins. Faced with the task of rebuilding, how could they do it? The Holman Christian Standard Bible commentary puts it this way, “Faced with rebuilding their temple and city, the chosen people felt small, powerless, and overwhelmed.”

An angel showed them, not only, the condition of the city and temple but also gave them the means by which they’d rebuild both. By God’s Spirit (Zech 4:6). The saw the problem and were given the solution.

Zechariah 4:6
So he answered me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by strength or by might, but by My Spirit,’ says the Lord of Hosts.

All of this made me consider the condition of the United States and how far we’ve drifted from where our Founding Fathers, by God’s enabling direction, started this nation. We live in a time where pleasure rules over reason. Good morales are nearly non-existent. Abortion is common place and touted as a “women’s right” while school shootings are caused by guns (not the person). Other double standards abound. And, God is being systematically removed from everywhere. The list of examples is endless!

I believe that God is calling us to return Him as individuals and as a nation. Where are you in this? Are you floating, casually, down stream with those who deny God or are you swimming upstream? It’s a difficult task when attempting in our own strength. But, “by His Spirit” is another thing.
